Frequently Asked Questions

Below is important information that we hope will help you determine whether or not Niseido Ju Jitsu is right for you.

1) We Are NOT a Mixed Martial Arts School.

The growing popularity of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) has somewhat created the impression that "Ju Jitsu" is synonmous with ground fighting, or submission wrestling. While ground fighting IS an important component of our art, Niseido Ju Jitsu is a complete system of self defense. In fact the majority of our style takes place from the standing position and encompasses Nage Waza (Judo throws), Kensetsu Waza (Joint Manipulation), and Goshin Jitsu (Self Defense). Our mantra is: "Survival is an everyday reality," therefore Niseido Ju Jitsu practitioners train to defend themselves from a standing position and against a variety of weaponry (edged weapons, sticks and firearms). We also train to defend ourselves quickly, efficiently and with devistating effects.

2) We are NOT a Koryu system.

True jujitsu dates back to the 1500s and was founded by the Samurai warriors as a means of defending themselves in the event of being disarmed in battle. Some of these classical styles are still in existance today and are commonly refered to as Koryu.

While Niseido Ju Jitsu is a traditional style of ju jitsu, Niseido practitioners do not practice kata, nor do we train to defend ourselves against weapons such as the katana (Samurai Sword), or bo (6-foot staff). We work with modern situations and weapons such as one would find on today's streets. Click Here for an example of the techniques and catagories of Niseido Ju Jitsu.

Niseido practitioners are strongly encouraged, however, to learn the history of ju jitsu and to respect documented koryu style.
